Ad-minister quick-start
This page describes how to get up and running using Ad-minister by means of example. It only touches the surface of some of the features, which are documented in more details on this page
1. Adding ads in the widget sidebar
1.1 What we want to do
We want to add the following ad as a widget in the sidebar of our WordPress blog.
<a href="http://www.tearitdown.org" target="_blank" > <img src="http://www.tearitdown.org/english/ banners/125x125_english.gif" border="0" /> </a>
which looks like:
1.2 How it’s done
- After you have activated the ad-minister plugin on the Plugins page go to ‘Manage->Ad-minister’
- Now we need to add a widget position in the ‘Position/Widgets’ tab within which the ad can appear. Click ‘Add new widget position’.
- Fill out a name for the position, e.g. ‘Widget 1′. You can add an optional description if you want. You can also add code that appears before and after the ad that is placed withing the position. Click ‘Save position’ to store the information.
- The widget position now exists and needs to be moved onto the sidebar of your theme. This is done under Design->Widgets. The position we just created is seen as ‘Ad: Widget 1′, click add and then save you changes. The widget is now positioned onto your sidebar, but since we haven’t added anything to it yet, nothing shows up when you load your blog. Let’s go ahead and add some content.
- In Manage->Ad-minister under the ‘Create Content’ tab, you can add the advert. Pick a title for the ad, e.g. ‘Amnesty Insernational’.
- Paste the html code of the ad into the editor. If we want to track how many people that click on the banner, add ‘%tracker%’ before the http:// of the link. This means that the html of the ad will look like:
<a href="%tracker%http://www.tearitdown.org" target="_blank" > <img src="http://www.tearitdown.org/english/ banners/125x125_english.gif" border="0" /> </a>
- Ignor the other options for now, and click ‘Save’.
- You are done!
If you add more content to that position, Ad-minister will rotate both ads so that each of them are shown 50% of the time. You can also go ahead and create how many widget positions as you wish. I find it’s a convenient way to add stuff to the sidebar without having to go into the templates and edit code.

Very very useful indeed.
How about adding a widget attached with stylesheet to allow ads to to display together? Let’s say we instead of displaying one ad, we can group the ads in four.
I guess you have seen this on other website.
Thx

Hello there, I have download this plugin but what if I want to use the tracking for the ads that is not in the widget sidebar? I have a banner ad on my blog now and when I try to just copy and paste the content code with %tracker%, it is being linked to my own site.
Thx

Magpies Zone: Do you mean a banner ad that lies outside the Ad-minister system? In general Ad-minister generates an internal url that counts the click, then forwards the user to the advertisers website.

Hi – Great plugin works fine except if I use %tracker% on a static page the hyperlink does not work. Any ideas?

Are impressions accurate if I am using a caching program?
Thanks!

I can not get the ad widget to appear on the widgets sidebar. I’ve added the widget position and I see that it’s saved, but it doesn’t appear as an available widget. I’m looking in Design> Widgets>Available Widgets.
I have the most recent version of WP.
Thanks!

I translated the plugin, I put the language (ad-minister-pt_BR.mo) file in the directory ad-minister, but it didn’t work. How to solve?
October 8th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Really cool plug-in! Couldn’t figure out how to make this work by hacking the template files and you really provided a great little solution!!!

This is a very powerful plugin. I would like to ask for one more capability though… it would be very helpful and useful to have the ability to specify that an ad only show in a specific archive category… if you could implement somehow a basic functionality of the “Who Sees Ads” plugin, that would make this a total solution.

Hi,
I can’t get it to work. Can’t even do step 2, which is to position the widgets.
When I go to the management page I get:
“Warning: array_keys() [function.array-keys]: The first argument should be an array in /home/sites/londonhuayu.co.uk/public_html/wp-content/plugins/ad-minister/ad-minister-functions.php on line 600″
Any idea what is wrong?

January 27th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
I’ve activated the Ad-minister plug-in and I received this error code.
I use Comic Press Plug-in. What I see when I click on setup or any of the buttons is “page not found”.
This is the error that shows up.
“Warning: array_keys() [function.array-keys]: The first argument should be an array in /mnt/local/home/tjgarofalo/entities-r-us.com/wp-content/plugins/ad-minister/ad-minister-functions.php on line 600
Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /mnt/local/home/tjgarofalo/entities-r-us.com/wp-content/plugins/ad-minister/ad-minister-functions.php on line 600
No data available.”
I’m not web code friendly, so if you have an answer, make it simple.
Thanks alot!

hi,
I got your plugin to work in WPMU (the 2.6.5 version) . I simply did a search for tools.php and replaced it with edit.php. Also for some reason the default post (administer_post_id) was not being created so I added it in manually. Did the trick and now at least positions work in WPMU just fine.
thanks for a great plugin. ps. you might want to add more descriptive tags to your widget on the wordpress website, it is hard to find. (ie. ads, ad, advertisements, ad rotator, advertising).
February 7th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
interestingly, I also had the errors above, so that is why I added the administer_post_id manually, perhaps there is some logic error in your code there. seems a lot of people have that issue.

Excellent plug-in that adds nice functionality to WP – thank you! But I’m curious as to why it’s counting one page load as 2, or sometimes 3, impressions. I set up a test, one position (template not widget) running to ads. The rotate beautifully, but for every page load, the impressions go up by two, sometimes by 3. There’s nothing fancy about my theme. The ad position is in the sidebar.
Any guess as to why that’s happening?

Hi, I have a problem with mo file. I translated po file and rename it ad-minister-pl_PL but i did’t work. Did I do somothing wrong?
Thanks for your reply
Regards Tom

2 Tom:
change domain id ‘p2m-ad-manager’ to ‘ad-minister’ in function administer_translate in file ad-minister-functions.php.
function administer_translate(){
// Load a language
load_plugin_textdomain(‘ad-minister’, PLUGINDIR . ‘/’ . dirname(plugin_basename (__FILE__)) );
}
Or simply rename your files p2m-ad-manager_pl_PL.*.

I’m using a two column theme, activated ad-minister and positions widget. It showed up in right column, but took the place of my category and archive panels. I’ve deactivated the plugin for now, but is there a way to position the widget or ads below my archives, etc.?
March 28th, 2009 at 9:10 am
i have showing my ads on my sidebar widget..yeah…
first, i just the same like every body else, cant find the ad-minister widget once i saved the widget positioning….

go to ad-minister page,on “settings” tab, tick the option “make themes widget”, then click “update settings”. Done. i found my ad-minister widget on available widget.

Multiple template positions.
How do you do it.
Everything else works fine
March 31st, 2009 at 7:58 am
Really cool work…
But i want to put add(or widget) some other places except the right side. is it possible ?
May 6th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
I’m encountering the same problem as Magpies Zone. Entering %tracker%http://www.website.com tracks the clilck, but doesn’t redirect to the advertisers web site. Instead it re-directs back to my web site. I’ve tried this using widgets as well as in a template position.
My current version of WordPress: 2.7.1

@ricland, @raveendran: What you need to do is set up another sidebar in functions.php. Instructions: http://automattic.com/code/widgets/themes/

Hello,
I need your help to resolve a bug with ad-minister.
I upgrade WP 2.7 with the new 2.8.
I have got 5 positions/widgets in ad-minister.
When i want to integrate widget in the sidebar, i just allowed to integrate one of them. The others are not displayed…
Before it was displayed as many widgets than i had in ad-minister.
Thx for your help
June 25th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Love the plug-in! Is there a chance you could allow for two columns of ads in the sidebar? WP125 does this, but I am already using Ad-minister and like it a lot. Thank you for giving this some thought; it would be a great feature to have (1 or 2 columns, configurable from the menu)!
All the best!
Mark

I followed the instruction #4 from above and I created 4 Widget Positions but I only have the first position showing on the Appearance / Widgets (WordPress 2.8.2). It works fine but how can I get the other 3 to be recognized. I checked the forums and other people are having this same problem but it seems there is very little activity on the forums.
If anyone has a clue, fill me in!
Luke

Kal, the only reason I put my last comment here is that there seems to be no current activity on the forums and with no ability to view other Widget Positions, other than the 1st one I created, I have no way to have multiple ads unless I put more than 1 in each content item but then that defeats the purpose of having a counter for views and clicks. Honestly, I’m not sure ‘why’ it doesn’t add the other widget positions to the sidebar in Appearance/Widgets as it did the first one. Is there a limitation on positions?
July 30th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Hello,
Is there a way to code positions by category? I would like to run different ads on the homepage and each of the category pages — i.e. business, distribution, power, etc.
Thank you,
Gina

In my site, the ads show only in one instance, when I have 4 of them. I tried adding weight, but not sure that you explain exactly what you put for weight, numbers, letters?
I’d like to show 4 ads at the same time instead of 1 and not sure how to make that happen since right now it only shows 1 random ad.
Thanks,
Ed

Hi,
First of all, Great Plugin! i love it.
I am seeing an error thought, which is that all the counts for the clicks are 0.
is there a bug or anything specific i have to do in order to turn on the counting of clicks?
thanks,
thorsten

Hey, you received all those donations including mine so you would update this fucking plugin and thousands of people who’ve been using it will be able to upgrade to wordpress to 2.8, thus making their websites far more secure.
So, what exactly is your problem?
Update this fucking plugin for 2.8, you lazy jackoff.

I am on WordPress 2.8.6. My website has about 20 pages.I am running Google Adsense which is working well for me. I want to add afilliate adds below the Adsense ads. I have installed Ad Minister. Will it allow me to place adds on specified pages. At the moment if I place one add using the other widgets the same add appears on all 20 pages.
Why is your widget not automatically displayed on the Dashboard column.
